Medical Monday: protect yourself against the flu

71 per cent fall in number of flu cases

"Even healthy people can get the flu", said Illinois Department of Public Health Director Nirav D. Shah, M.D., J.D.

According to the American Lung Association, the influenza or flu is not just a bad cold, but a serious and contagious respiratory illness, and can be fatal. No appointment is necessary.

Get vaccinated. The best way to protect yourself and your family from the flu is to get an annual flu shot, and the flu vaccination is recommended for everyone 6 months and older.

On November 23, 2018, a prospective cohort study of 8,827 Australians "FluMum", published in Clinical Infectious Disease, found that regardless of the trimester, women who received an IIV influenza vaccine did not report adverse birth outcomes, when compared with unvaccinated mothers.

For more information about the flu and getting a flu vaccine, call the Perry County Health Department at 931-589-2138 or visit Tennessee Health Department online.

Dr. Willbrandt says the flu starts with a rapid onset of fever, along with a runny nose, watery eyes, and body aches.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone ages six months and older receive a flu vaccine each year. Antiviral drugs like Tamiflu can be prescribed to reduce symptoms and help fight the flu. It also spreads when people touch certain surfaces or objects contaminated with the droplets. No one should go unprotected from the flu.

It can take up to two weeks after vaccination for antibodies that protect against flu to develop in the body, so getting vaccinated now would still provide protection from the flu over the holidays. It is especially important for these individuals to be vaccinated each year.

The Clover Health Flu Shot Monitor found that 75% of people aged 80 or more years, 66% of those aged 70 to 79, and 56% of adults aged 60 to 69 have been vaccinated so far this year.
