Friends

Netflix is dealing with some serious backlash after they announced that the 90's sitcom that follows a group of friends living their lives will be pulled from the platform in January.

At the time of this writing, however, that expiration date has disappeared from the show's Netflix page.

Don't expect Friends to be gone from a streaming service for long.

Protesting to keep Friends on Netflix is futile, because Friends' exit is a cold, hard business decision.

Losing Friends will be a big blow for Netflix as the comedy is the third most popular sitcom in the U.S. behind The Big Bang Theory and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

"Friends" aficionados took to social media to complain about Netflix's potential loss of the show and threatened to cancel their subscriptions - something that routinely happens when popular content leaves any service.

According to a report from Engadget, Friends will leave Netflix US on january 1, 2019, meaning the last day to watch the season will be New Year's Eve.

This is bad news for Friends fans and Netflix as a whole.

"Friends" has been one of the most popular licensed shows on Netflix, ranking in top 10 of the most-viewed licensed TV shows for the 12 months ending in September 2017, according to a data analysis from 7Park Data.

However, it may not be all smooth sailing for the Friends Netflix rights in the future.

One of the new entrants in the streaming space next year will be Warner Bros.' parent company, WarnerMedia, which will launch its own branded streaming platform at the end of 2019.

Disney is also launching its own service late next year called Disney+, and the effects of that are already being felt on Netflix, as well.
