"He was doing everything he could to get the ladder!"

One Texas family's hilarious Christmas decorations were so convincing, they duped the neighborhood to think a dummy falling from the roof while stringing holiday lights was a real person.

According to police officers, Mr Norwood's call was not the first one police had received about the Heerlein house.

The family said they bought the dummy online and decked it out in a Chevy Chase mask and clothes like those the actor wore in the film.

They felt so bad about the passerby's reaction that they reached out to him to thank him for being so concerned.

The family now has a sign attached to the bottom of the ladder saying the dummy is part of their holiday display and not to call emergency officials.

"We'd love to be able to find him and reach out".

The Good Samaritan, a retired veteran by the name of Alfred, took it all in stride once he realized the display was not real. "Then I thought, 'Oh my God I hope he's not dead, lemme call 9-1-1'".

He told ABC 13: "I was trying to get him down any way I can".

They said they were giving the man who rushed to help a $500 gift card to show their appreciation for his caring spirit. "Except when I started talking to him, he never said nothing!" the passerby told KVUE. The would-be hero was captured on camera trying to move a ladder to come to the man's rescue, screaming for help and eventually calling 911.
