Ada Hegerberg celebrates with the Women's Ballon d'Or award

Hegerberg made history as the first victor of the women's Ballon d'Or but her moment in the spotlight was sullied by Martin Solveig, a French DJ who was on stage for the award.

However, there was controversy surrounding the ceremony in Paris after Hegerberg was asked if she knew how to twerk when she collected her award on stage by host Martin Solveig, a French DJ.

She scored a tournament-record 15 goals for Lyon in the Women's Champions League last season.

'Watch the full sequence people who have followed me for 20 years know how respectful I am especially with women'. I didn't really consider it a sexual harassment or anything in the moment. "Most importantly congratulations to Ada".

Hegerberg had said the award signified "a huge step for women's football" before the ceremony, but that was countered by Solveig's actions just minutes after the award was presented.

Solveig then tweeted a photo from backstage in which he is shaking hands with Hegerberg.

The three-time Women's Champions League victor with French side Lyon was named the world's best female player of 2018 at a gala in Paris.

"You've seen that I prepared a little celebration for (France forward) Kylian (Mbappe) so we said we're going to do something similar".

"I explained to [Ada Hegerberg] the buzz and she told me she understood it was a joke".

Pernille Harder (Denmark/Wolfsburg), Dzsenifer Maroszan (Germany/Lyon), Marta (Brazil/Orlando Pride) and Sam Kerr (Australia/Chicago Red Stars) filled out the top five.

She has said that she won't play for Norway at next year's Women's World Cup. They have existed since 1956 but had not previously had a women's football category.

I wish the national team the best, though.

It recognises her as the best female footballer in the world.

Modric is the first man to win the award since 2007 that is not called Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi.

Imagine the honour of being crowned the inaugural women's victor of soccer's top individual prize - the Ballon d'Or for player of the year.
