Russian rocket launches trio to space station, two months after aborted trip

Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques lifts off on Russian rocket to International Space Station

Three astronauts have blasted off on the first manned Soyuz rocket launch since a dramatic failure in October.

The launch was closely scrutinised because of the abortive mission to the ISS on October 11, which ended two minutes after take-off when a rocket failure forced its two-man crew to perform an emergency landing.

Russian Federation said last month the launch of the Soyuz rocket failed because of a sensor that was damaged during assembly at the Baikonur cosmodrome, but officials insisted the spacecraft remains reliable.

Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko, Anne McClain of Nasa and David Saint-Jacques of the Canadian space agency blasted off for a six-and-a-half month mission on the worldwide space station at the expected time of 11.31 GMT (5.01 pm).

Speaking before the trip on Sunday, crew commander Oleg Kononenko affirmed his crew "absolutely" trusted the flight's preparation. Blastoff kicked off a 6-hour-, four-orbit-long journey to the space station for the trio of astronauts on board. Meanwhile, Kononenko, Saint-Jacques and McClain will spend the next six and a half months in orbit.

The Soyuz-FG rocket booster with Soyuz MS-11 space ship carrying a new crew to the International Space Station, ISS, blasts off at the Russian leased Baikonur cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, Monday, Dec. 3, 2018.

"Risk is part of our profession", the 54-year-old said.

The Soyuz was "successfully launched into orbit", Roscosmos wrote on Twitter.

Russian Federation said last month the October launch had failed because of a sensor damaged during assembly at the Baikonur cosmodrome, but insisted the spacecraft remained reliable.

The Russian rocket carries US astronaut Anne McClain, Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko? and CSA astronaut David Saint Jacques.

On the space station, the crew of NASA's Serena Aunon-Chancellor, Russian Sergei Prokopyev and German Alexander Gerst were waiting for their arrival.

Kononenko added that the crew would conduct a spacewalk on December 11 as part of the investigation into a mysterious hole that has caused an air leak on the ISS.

But the space agency's chief executive, former deputy prime minister Dimitry Rogozin, has been bullish about the project, according to Russian news agency Interfax.
