Luka Modric becomes first Croatian to win prestigious Ballon d'Or

Ronaldo, 33, is a contender to win the individual honour for a record sixth time after leading Real Madrid to a third straight Champions League crown earlier this year.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have each won the last 10 Ballon d'Or awards, but after Luka Modric's triumphs over Ronaldo for UEFA and FIFA's best player awards and with his World Cup Golden Ball, it's possible the Croatian star completes the sweep with the voters for France Football's honor.

The 2018 edition of the Ballon d'Or ceremony is set to be held on Tuesday, December 3 and the event will be taking place in the French capital of Paris.

Messi, despite being two years younger than Ronaldo, was actually the first man to overtake Raul's previous record of 71 goals, when he scored a hat-trick against APOEL back in November 2014.

The pair have won an incredible five awards each, with Ronaldo equalling Messi's tally a year ago. From winning the Golden Boy award in 2017 to lifting the World Cup with France and now being in firm contention for the Ballon d'Or, Mbappe has already cemented his name as one of the top players in the world.

However, you can not look past a Champions League winner's medal and a World Cup triumph, two tournaments in which Varane played a leading role.

In December of previous year, Modric was in the background of these events, congratulating Cristiano Ronaldo from the crowds as the Portuguese celebrated his fifth Ballon d'Or at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

With five Ballon d'Ors each, their domination began in 2008 with the Portuguese attacker winning as a Manchester United player. Who do you think will come away with the award on Monday evening?
