Former President George H.W. Bush, who died Friday night at age 94, is remembered by many for his "thousand points of light" call for public service.

"Sometimes people think politics is tawdry".

"President Bush has left us for one last flight but his destination isn´t unknown". "As President, he set the stage for decades of prosperity that have followed".

Bush's wife and former first lady Barbara, died at the age of 92 on April 17, and he was survived by his five children, including former president George W. Bush and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

Sir John paid tribute to the way Mr Bush had recognised the need to assemble an worldwide coalition to eject Saddam following the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait.

Later, in November when Zulfikar Ali Bhutto arrived in NY to lead the Pakistani delegation, Bush backed Bhutto's passionate call to the 15-member Council to stop the war so that a political solution could be found.

A defining moment of Bush's single term in office was spearheading the military intervention against Iraq's invasion of the small, oil-rich nation of Kuwait in 1991.

During the discussion, Obama lauded the former president for his diplomacy.

Americans' hearts "are heavy today", Obama said, but they "are also filled with gratitude", adding that "our thoughts are with the entire Bush family" and also all who "were inspired by George and Barbara's example".

It was the first agreement to call for deep reductions of USA and Russian strategic nuclear weapons.

"He did a lot for his nation, he did a lot for the world and of course relations between Australia and the United States have always been strong and were certainly strong during his presidency", Mr McCormack said.

Former prime minister David Cameron tweeted: "So sad to hear that George HW Bush has passed away".

James A. Baker III, secretary of state in the Bush administration, stated that "The legacy of George H.W. Bush will be forever etched in the history of America and the world. I send my love to his family tonight".
