Police managed to find the ring after the couple gave up searching for

The newly-betrothed couple who turned to the NYPD for help when her engagement ring fell into a Times Square utility grate Friday night has been identified - and will soon have the sparkler back in hand.

The NYPD Special Ops team went to the area to recover and clean the lost engagement ring Saturday morning.

The couple asked police for help, but emergency service officers could not immediately find the sparkler.

On Sunday, after social sleuths assisted in the multinational probe, the New York Police Department announced it was closing its intensive investigation.

The video shows the man dropping down to the New York City street to try and rescue the ring.

"I want to clarify that I did not propose over a grate in Times Square - that's where we lost it", Mr Drennan said.

The NYPD are seeking the public's help in finding the pair in the hope of performing a Christmas miracle by reuniting them with their ring.

Both John and Daniella took to Twitter to express their delight and thank the NYPD officers involved.

Mr Drennan had earlier proposed in Central Park but the ring was too big.

According to police, the pair had already left the USA, but soon realized that the NYPD had found their missing ring.

They've now found them, allowing Daniella to finally slip that lovely ring on her finger.

The New York Police Department shared video of a man and a woman looking through a drain in Times Square on Sunday.
