Have Manchester United Been Given European Lifeline? UEFA Announce Brand New Competition!

UEL2 Uefa announce new European club competition

That process is repeated in the UEL2 with the eight second-placed teams from the group stage meeting the eight third-placed teams in the Europa League for a place in the last 16.

UEFA's executive committee has officially approved the creation of a third European club competition, beginning in 2021.

Matches in the UEL2 will be played like Europa League games on Thursday nights to ensure the Champions League's prime Tuesday and Wednesday night TV slots are untouched.

In addition, before the last sixteen there will be a play-off round between teams finishing second in each group and teams to have finished third in their Europa League groups.

Every country's champions will still enter the Champions League, but only teams from the 15 top-ranked countries will go into the Europa League group stages or qualifiers.

In total, there will be 141 games played over 15 weeks, with the victor earning a spot in the Europa League for the following campaign.

"This has been achieved with a strategic approach, and in accordance with UEFA's objective of having both more quality and more inclusivity in our club competitions".

The winners of the competition will then be guaranteed a place in the Europa League the following domestic campaign. All member associations will have access to the three club competitions and all associations will keep the same overall access quota as now.

"UEFA's new club competitions makes UEFA's club competitions more inclusive than ever", Ceferin explained.

European football's governing body had already committed to using VAR in its competitions from 2019-20 onwards.

Manchester City's final group match against Hoffenheim next week is to be used by Uefa as its final non-live trial of VAR, with the system introduced from the first knockout round in February.

"There was a widespread demand by all clubs to increase their chances of participating more regularly in European competition".

The Champions League format does not change.
