Microsoft revamps its Office 365 app icons with a simplified look
The company announced that the redesigned Office icons come as part of its focus towards pushing Office as a collaborative suite platform that allows users to access it in real-time the products from any device anywhere.
The redesign reflects Office's move toward a cloud-based suite of tools that are accessible from a multitude of devices and platforms. Now, the software giant is updating Office to reflect the new design starting with the Office icons themselves. This initiative is also part of Microsoft's reflection that represents how much the Office family of apps have evolved over the past five years since the icons last received an update. And Office works across platforms, as it's available on Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. Color differentiates apps and creates personality, and for the new icons we chose hues that are bolder, lighter and friendlier - a nod to how Office has evolved. It'll streamlining the ribbon and carrying over its Fluent Design from Windows 10 to the Office apps.
The new icons show two separate panels: one with a letter on it (such as a W for Word), and another with an app symbol (such as lines of text for Word).

The changes hint at some of the coming changes to the Microsoft Office productivity suite.
The new logos look three-dimensional and more like modern app thumbnails.
We can also see changes to the News, Calculator and Calendar icons, which in many ways herald a partial return to skeuomorphism.
It's also unclear when these icons are going to be rolling out. Outlook Mobile is even getting an overhaul, with shared mailbox support and new gestures.
