Instagram's new 'close friends'

Instagram's new 'close friends' feature

Whenever you share a story, you'll have the option of sharing it with everyone or just your Close Friends.

To access this feature, go to your profile and tap on "Close Friends" in the side menu to begin creating a list of people you'd like to share Stories with. In this case, a green badge will appear on that person's story indicating they've chosen you as a "close friend".

What just happened? Instagram's Close Groups is the direct result of a feature the company started testing roughly 18 months ago called favorites.

Better yet, people that you haven't added to your list won't see any of your designated stories at all, and won't even know that they've been left out. But Instagram wants people to have their cake and eat it too and is now adding a new feature that will let them do that. You can also easily identify who considers you trustworthy by going to your Stories tray and looking for the people that have a green ring around their profile pictures. "You can share things that are maybe a bit less polished, less flawless, [and] daily moments from your life", said Debra Aho Williamson, principal analyst at eMarketer who covers social media marketing. Instagram will suggest those you interact with the most.

The update is likely to further complicate the already high-stakes social dynamics of Instagram accounts, particularly for teens, which popularized the "finsta" phenomenon in the first place. On the upside, though, you might be able to finally ditch that finsta account.

Rival Snap Inc owner of Snapchat, which faces stiff competition from Instagram has been redesigning the app to lure more users and advertisers.
