Amazon Web Services announces its own custom-designed ARM server processor
It's possible that the Graviton chips could become Amazon's processors of choice for its cloud servers in the near future because the new electronic circuitry units support the latest versions of the internet retailer's main EC2 cloud-computing service, according to Bloomberg. "To take the data and do something with it, you need some kind of infrastructure", AWS Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassy said at the re:Invent here. AWS said during natural disasters, downlinked imagery data can be rapidly analysed to identify survivors, assess structural damages, and rapidly stream this data to first responders and rescue teams. There are two Ground Stations set up today, and 12 more will be deployed in 2019, Jassy said.
The new service will allow its customers to get access to a ground station on short notice in order to handle special events such as severe weather, a natural disaster, or even sports games, said the company.
Another downside of a parabolic antenna is that it can only connect to one satellite at a time, and only when it passes overhead.
At present, companies that use satellite data invest large sums in building ground stations, to receive and process satellite data. The Verge antenna network is deployed across the globe and communicates with 800 satellites now in orbit around the Earth.
It is partnering with several satellite companies including Spire Global, DigitalGlobe and BlackSky. "Ellie Mae is able to use the breadth and depth of the world's leading cloud to be more efficient and innovative, refocusing their manpower and capital on ways to automate the mortgage lending process instead of infrastructure procurement and management".
These nodes or antennae, when spread across the world, can help satellites, planes, ships, and telecommunications.
"We have ten antennas at present in the Denver area", he added. "Not what you expected", was how he concluded the first announcement of a very niche Ground Station-as-a-service solution for the satellite industry.
Pay for usage: With AWS Ground Station, it's possible to pay for the actual antenna time used. A single price will let companies use any antenna in the global AWS Ground Station network.
At present, customers wait for satellites to pass over a certain location, with existing ground infrastructure. The satellite scheduling on-demand allows faster data downloads when needed.
AWS will be offering new EC2 A1 compute instances based on this Graviton processor and for certain workloads, like web servers, the costs could be as much as 45 percent lower than traditional Intel-based compute instances.
"Leading companies in financial services like Ellie Mae turn to AWS for the agility, security, performance, and cloud services required to operate at scale and with speed", said Mike Clayville, Vice President, Worldwide Commercial Sales at AWS.
Year Old Samuel Little has confessed to 90 murders
In all three cases, the victims had been beaten and strangled, and their bodies were dumped in an alley, a dumpster and a garage. Federal officials said Little was charged with killing women in MS and Florida, but was not indicted or convicted.
Durant sparks Warriors, who end 4-game skid
The Warriors didn't have it offensively from the jump on Monday, so Durant took it upon himself to carry the offense. He and Thompson have carried the load as the Warriors won a third straight following a rare four-game losing streak.
