GM plant in Oshawa, Ont., to shut down

GM Reportedly Plans to Close Its Factory in Oshawa, Canada, Leaving 2500 Jobless

Trudeau and Innovation Minister Navdeep Bains have said the government is ready to support workers affected by the closure, but both have pointed out that GM seems unwilling to change its mind about the the Oshawa closure as the company pursues a broader global restructuring.

GM says it is maintaining its profitable lineup of SUVs and trucks but will shift away from some of its smaller vehicles that haven't seen strong sales. The company said the moves are part of an effort to cut 15 percent of its workforce.

The two MI assembly plants GM announced will close are the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant and the Warren Transmission Plant.

"We are announcing the cessation of certain products resulting in a number of plants being without allocated volume to produce", GM spokesperson Julie Huston-Rough told NPR.

He said he and neighbouring Oshawa MP Colin Carrie were "reaching out for information".

"They told me straight up there's nothing we can do", Ontario Premier Doug Ford told lawmakers, according to the CBC.

I suppose, in hindsight, we should have seen this coming.

We're not going to let General Motors jerk us around.

"What we're going to implement is that they can work the 20 hours and then they will be allowed to collect EI".

"The first thing I said to (the president of GM) 'is there anything we can do as a province, absolutely anything, ' and the answer was no, there's nothing".

Meanwhile, GM will be investing heavily in autonomous and electric vehicle technology, said Barra. "We think it's appropriate to do it at a time, and get in front of it, while the company is strong and while the economy is strong". "They are showing that we can do this better than anybody in the world and we will perform here and show people that we can do this well".

During a press conference on the closure Monday afternoon, Scheer said that his party would be calling for the debate "so parliamentarians can talk about what can be done".

Warren Transmission is set to close in August 2019 while Detroit-Hamtramck will start layoffs in March.

Like other US vehicle manufacturers, GM is shifting away from production of sedans and toward the more popular SUVs and light-duty trucks, although it did not specify that any models will be eliminated from its lineup.

Some of the closing plants could reopen in the future depending on the outcome of next year's labor negotiations with the United Auto Workers union.

"The ones that are sole-sourced to the plant, you know, who've been living off GM rather than getting out and hustling other business, they're vulnerable".
