Dead Sperm Whale Found with 6kg of Plastic in its Stomach

Wildlife conservation group WWF and authorities found about 5.9kg of plastic waste in the mammal's stomach, including 115 plastic cups, 4 plastic bottles, 25 plastic bags, 2 flip-flops, a nylon sack and more than 1,000 assorted pieces of plastic.

A sperm whale which washed ashore in Indonesia was found dead with 115 plastic cups in its stomach.

Upon further examination of the dead whale, it was found to have swallowed almost six kilograms of plastic waste.

Due to the whale's state of decay, it was not possible to determine if the plastic was the cause of death.

The 9.5-metre sperm whale before was found by rescuers from the Wakatobi National Park.

"Although we have not been able to deduce the cause of death, the facts that we see are truly terrible", she said.

A 2015 report by Ocean Conservancy and the McKinsey Center for Business and Environment found that over 50% of the plastic leaking into world oceans comes from China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, suggesting that the two whales died in unsafe waters for marine life.

The cause of the death was still unknown and the carcass was to be buried on Tuesday without a necropsy (an animal autopsy) because of its decayed condition.

Indonesia has one of the largest plastic pollution problems in the world.

Around the world, an estimated 8 million metric tons of plastic waste gets dumped in our seas every year, causing countless marine animals to suffer from either becoming entangled in the material or ingesting it, which leads to suffocation or starvation.

It's hard to know exactly how much is making its way into the ocean, but a 2015 study found that the figure was up to 12.7 million metric tons in 2010 alone. Plastic waste also kills planktons in the sea, depleting it of oxygen - and oceans contribute more than half of the oxygen in the atmosphere.

The Indonesian co-ordinating minister of maritime affairs, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, said that the government had been shocked into action following the discovery of the whale. He vowed that the government would bolster its efforts to stop plastic from reaching oceans in the near future.

"I'm so sad to hear this", said Pandjaitan.

During an autopsy veterinarians found more than 80 plastic bags in the whale's stomach.
