Women hold 23 of the 100 U.S. Senate seats, and this year 23 women are on the ballot for the chamber. That's in addition to the 10 female senators who were not up for re-election this year. That number is up from the 84 women now serving in the 115th Congress. And it will bring the share of Congress members who are women up from the current 20 percent to at least 22 percent. They include veterans, a former Central Intelligence Agency operative, a teacher who grew up the daughter of a drug addict, a one-time bartender and dozens of first-time candidates.
The first Native American women have also been elected to Congress, with Democrats Deb Haaland winning in New Mexico and Sharice Davids in Kansas. Democracy Now! was there with The Intercept for our special election broadcast.
And the women elected this year are overwhelmingly Democratic. Flipping these so-called "split districts" divided between Democratic presidential support and a Republican representative was a key element of the Democrats' strategy to take control of the House in 2018, according to analysts. The news conference participants called on Obama to "go bold and go big" and to use his executive authority to reform immigration if Congress could not get the job done.
"Though prominent figures like Andrew Gillum, the Democratic candidate for governor of Florida, failed to win their potentially historic elections, many candidates around the country became the first person of their gender, race, ethnicity or sexual orientation to be elected to their positions in their states, or in some cases, in the country". They will join four other female veterans now serving in Congress.
(5) Cindy Hyde-Smith won a plurality in MS and is heavily favored to win her runoff election to become the first woman ever elected to the US Senate from her state.
Rates of female voters have equaled or exceeded those of men for decades, according to a study by the Center for American Women and Politics.
Men, meanwhile, were about evenly split, with 50 percent voting for Republicans to 48 percent choosing Democrats.
Three times as many women stood for the Democratic party as the Republican party - 211 for the Democrats and 64 for the Republicans.
But within the exit polls there are a few more broad lessons about partisanship by gender in America. "Tonight, just in suburban Philadelphia, in the Lehigh Valley where I'm speaking from, four women won in a really tight area". In 1982, 58 per cent of women voted for Democrats and 41 per cent voted for Republicans. "Democrats took the House back because of women voters".
