Ten Years And $300 Million? Not Good Enough, Says Bryce Harper

Report: Harper Turned Down $300 Million Extension with Nats, Asking Price Expected to Start at $400 Million

The Post reported on Tuesday that the offer didn't include any opt-outs and was less than the $400 million some have speculated Harper would receive after he and his agent Scott Boras held discussions throughout September.

Harper is hitting free agency far sooner than most, due to debuting in the majors while in his teens and still has likely at least five prime years left, if not seven or eight. It's not hard to see why Phillies managing partner John Middleton, along with general manager Matt Klentak and president Andy MacPhail, would be willing to issue a historic contract to Harper to play his home games at hitter-friendly Citizens Bank Park.

This is the player they want.

Since Harper was under contract with the Nationals at the time, they had exclusive rights to negotiate with him.

Reports emerged Wednesday morning that Harper rejected the Washington Nationals' last offer worth $300 million over 10 years. Giancarlo Stanton signed a 13-year, $325 million deal with the Marlins, but now has $270 million remaining over the next 10 years following his trade to the Yankees. They signed "in a non-rights market", Boras said - one in which multiple teams could not bid on his services.

"I'm comfortable with the alternative (to Harper re-signing)", Rizzo added. For the moment, it seems he and Boras will explore options elsewhere. The Nationals made him a qualifying offer last Friday.

Harper in the middle of that lineup could certainly help the team break its three-year playoff drought.

Zack Greinke ($US34 million), David Price ($US31 million) and Clayton Kershaw ($US31 million) all got more. But no position player has ever earned an average annual value of more than $27.5 million (Alex Rodriguez and Yoenis Cespedes).
