The Fight for the Senate, 2018: The Results As They Come In
The results were hailed as a turning point by Democrats in elections billed as a verdict on the first two years of Mr Trump's divisive presidency but fell short of a "blue wave" of sweeping victories. Nearly all of the most pivotal Senate spots are unfolding in very conservative areas, such as North Dakota, Missouri, and in, where Trump won by leaps and bounds and where the Democratic incumbents could possibly give up seats to Republicans. The president proclaimed the election's outcome a "tremendous success".
It's not clear how big their margin of victory will be in the House. They performed well across much of the upper Midwest and even in ruby-red Kansas, where Laura Kelly was elected governor over the president's handpicked candidate, Kris Kobach.
To stem Republican losses, Trump sprinted through mostly white regions of the country, interjecting dark and foreboding warnings about what Democratic power would mean for the nation. Joe Manchin III delivered a personal blow to the president.
As Election Day unfolded, Democrats were increasingly confident, predicting they would pick up at least the 23 seats needed for a House majority on the strength of voter enthusiasm, robust fundraising and unusually fresh candidates. It is typical enough that the party of the President will take a hit at the midterms.
A Democratic majority in the House would break the GOP's monopoly on power in Washington and give the party a check on Trump's agenda.
Faced with the possibility of keeping the Senate but losing the House, aides in recent days had laid out the political reality to Trump, who could face an onslaught of Democratic-run investigations. In suburban Chicago, Republican Representative Peter Roskam, a key architect of the 2017 tax overhaul, was defeated by Democrat Sean Casten. Joe Donnelly lost his bid for reelection in IN, and Republican Marsha Blackburn won the open Senate seat in Tennessee, a race that Democrats had hoped would slide into their column. Sen. Claire McCaskill is unable to hold on in Missouri. "His actions, his verbage, he's clearly the focal point", said Tim Phillips, president of the Koch-backed Americans for Prosperity, which has poured millions into certain races this cycle to help preserve the Republican majority.
"We have a choice to make tomorrow morning: Are we going to wake up and bask in sorrow and defeat?"
"I am extremely happy with the economy", Gerlock said. Ted Cruz (R) despite raising record sums of money and attracting grass-roots support throughout the country.
In victory speeches across the country, women acknowledged the groundbreaking year.
Today's results were set to transform the House, not only in partisan makeup but also in gender, age and ethnicity. Democrats are relying more upon women, people of color, young people and college graduates.
In predominantly Arab American neighbourhoods in Dearborn, Michigan, long lines were forming at polling stations in the afternoon - a rare sight for midterm elections.
Trump held the rally in Missouri to promote Hawley, who's in a neck-and-neck race with Democratic Sen.
Rep. Mia Love, who was the sole black Republican woman in Congress, was trailing in Utah to Democrat Ben McAdams. Dean Heller, the only Republican seeking re-election in a state Democrat Hillary Clinton won in the 2016 presidential race.
If Democrats capture the House, they could block Mr Trump's policy agenda and launch congressional investigations into Trump's administration, including his tax returns, possible business conflicts of interest and the nature of his 2016 campaign's ties to Russian Federation. Mike Coffman (R) in suburban Denver and Kevin Yoder (R) in the Kansas City suburbs, among others.
Democrats' performance in the House battlefield was mixed.
In a disappointment for the Democrats, incumbent GOP Rep. Garland "Andy" Barr held off a strong challenge from Democrat Amy McGrath, a former fighter pilot.
Democrats also could recapture governorships in several battleground states such as Michigan, Wisconsin and OH, a potential help for the party in those states in the 2020 presidential race.
Democrats also had opportunities because of the retirements of Republican Sens. Jeff Flake (Ariz.) and Bob Corker (Tenn.), Romney is poised to become the leading Republican counterweight to Trump in the Senate, if he chooses to take on that role.
A House takeover amounts to major vindication for Pelosi, who became the first female House speaker in 2006, only to lose the majority in 2010 as voters rebelled against former President Barack Obama's health care law in the first midterm elections of his presidency. Several television networks, including the president's favorite Fox News Channel, yanked a Trump campaign advertisement off the air on the eve of the election, determining that its portrayal of a murderous immigrant went too far.
