Sheikh Mohammed spoke regularly with Appleby over the past few months as they formulated the plan to get Cross Counter in the $7.3 million Melbourne Cup.
"This is all down to Sheikh Mohammed", said Appleby.
Their respect was such that Australian-born McEvoy, the 2004 St Leger-winning rider on Rule Of Law, was the obvious choice to partner the late maturing Cross Counter to a historic win as William Buick, Appleby's No 1 rider, could not make the light weight.
He said he had spoken to Sheikh Mohammed, the ruler of Dubai, who was "over the moon" with the result.
VideoWATCH: 2018 Melbourne Cup winning trainer Charlie Appleby says Cross Counter's win is still sinking in.
"It has been on the bucket list for a long time and I am in the fortunate position to produce these horses", said Moulton Paddocks' Appleby, who also delivered a first-ever Derby for Godolphin this year with Masar's victory at Epsom. Godolphin has won hundreds of Group I races around the world but before today had never won the big one in Australia, despite more than 20 attempts.
A decision to target the Melbourne Cup fresh this year has nearly achieved the dream result for connections of English-trained stayer Marmelo at Flemington.
And when he did, the relatively inexperienced Cross Counter rounded up a field of seasoned stayers and ran away from them to win by a length from Marmelo, with A Prince Of Arran in third place.
Victoria Racing Club chairwoman Amanda Elliot also congratulated the victorious Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates.
There was further drama from the post-race veterinary examination of horses for the two favourites, Magic Circle and Yucatan. "Hindsight is showing to us, maybe not financially, it was the right decision in skipping the Caulfield Cup with him".
This year, Sheikh Mohammed had three runners in the Melbourne Cup, spread across his three training operations headed by Appleby and Saeed Bin Suroor in the United Kingdom and UAE and James Cummings in Australia.
Jockey Kerrin McEvoy celebrated his third win in the grueling two-mile race, drawing level with active jockeys Damien Oliver and Glen Boss.
The Newmarket-based Appleby, who gave Godolphin its first Epsom Derby victor, Masar, in June, added: "This is huge for everybody".
"It's a real problem for you lot because, bar Winx - and even the horses Winx is beating. this Melbourne Cup has just confirmed everything. Well done to Charlie and this little horse", McEvoy said.
