Boeing issues warning on potential instrument malfunction after Lion Air crash

The accident happened just 10 days after a Lion AirBoeing 737-Max 8 plane plunged into the Java Sea minutes after takeoff from Jakarta to Pangkal Pinang city.
The Chicago-based manufacturer said investigators probing the crash of Flight JT610, in which all 189 on board were killed, had found that one of the "angle of attack" sensors on the brand new plane had provided incorrect readings.
The sensor keeps track of the angle of the aircraft nose relative to oncoming air to prevent the plane from stalling and diving.
This comes in the wake of a new Lion Air Boeing 737 MAX crashing into the sea not long after leaving Jakarta, Indonesia, and killing all 189 passengers on board.
Aerospace and defense giant Boeing is planning to issue a safety warning to people flying its 737 Max jet, Bloombergreported on Tuesday.
An overview of the 737 MAX flight manual revision being issued by the FAA. If the angle is too high as a plane climbs, that would cause a stall. The committee said the pilots were dealing with an erroneous airspeed indication. Erroneous readings from the AOA sensor could push the plane into an aggressive, unwarranted dive.
The warning follows preliminary findings from the Lion Air crash that the angle-of-attack (AOA) sensor malfunctioned.
"We will.conduct a special audit of the crews' qualifications and staff communication", transportation minister Budi Karya Sumadi told reporters Monday as he announced the probe into Lion's operations.
"The aircraft and pilot are grounded for investigation objective", said Pramintohadi in a written statement on Wednesday, November 7.
Indonesian investigators said Wednesday that an AOA sensor on the jet was replaced the day before the doomed flight, on October 28, when a pilot flying the same aircraft on a different route, from Bali to Jakarta, reported problems with it.

While modern jetliners primarily operate on autopilot, the computerized system can disengage when airspeed indicators malfunction, forcing pilots to manually fly the aircraft.
The work was carried out by Boeing Shanghai Aviation Services and Taikoo (Shandong) Aircraft Engineering Company, and the two companies have delivered the first four Boeing 737-800 BCFs earlier this year.
A search for the cockpit voice recorder, the second so-called black box, remains underway.
Pilots raise and lower the nose of Boeing jetliners by pushing and pulling on a yoke in the cockpit, which controls panels at the tail known as elevators.
