"We're seeing to the growing number of Australians who feel uncomfortable about watching horse racing, and tragic incident like this provided a catalyst for that concern".

The death of Irish stayer The Cliffsofmoher cast a pall over the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, angering animal rights groups and shining the spotlight on the safety record of Australia's most prestigious race meeting.

"The horse received immediate veterinary care, however it was unable to be saved due to the nature of the injury sustained", he said.

Parties galore are also in store across Perth, some of the biggest being held at Market Grounds, Henry Summer, The Stables, The Bach Club and, of course, Crown Perth, which a year ago hosted 24,000 WA racing fans on Cup day and expects even more today.

The RSPCA in Australia later tweeted that the horse was the sixth to die in the Melbourne Cup since 2013, and "highlights the very real risks to horses from racing".

"Charlie Appleby has done the most unbelievable job this year, huge credit to him and his team. It's great that an English trainer has finally won this race".

The victor stormed down from the outside in the final several hundred meters for a length victory.

Third-place finisher, Prince of Arran, had won the Lexus Stakes on Derby Day to secure its place in the Melbourne Cup, leaving trainer Charlie Fellowes agonisingly close to a Melbourne Cup Carnival double inside four days. "What a field to do it in".

Speaking to media prior to the race, McEvoy revealed that he had promised his kids a swimming pool and his wife a house if he took out a third Melbourne Cup, and now he is set to stay true to his word.

During the trophy presentation, rain which had affected the lead-up to the race again started to fall at Flemington. "But Kerrin, I'm just delighted, that's some ride, I saw him going down the back there.the way he angled out when making his ride; I just thought, turning in, if he finds the gaps, this horse has got the gears to pick up".

"I'm just lucky to be in a position to train these horses", said Appleby.

Sportsbet on Tuesday said Perth punters were favouring favourites Magic Circle ($7), Yucatan ($7) and Marmelo ($13) but also had a soft spot for the outsiders.

Japan-based Chestnut Coat, trained by Yoshito Yahagi, was 14th.
