BLACKBURN TAKES TENNESSEE: GOP Candidate Defeats Democrat Phil Bredesen

Republican Marsha Blackburn Wins Tennessee Senate Seat

Republican Senate candidate Marsha Blackburn says Election Day is going to be a "great day" for her campaign against Democrat Phil Bredesen.

A conservative firebrand and a regular on cable TV news, Blackburn had campaigned as a committed Trump ally, even more so than many other Republican candidates this year.

Bredesen looked to blunt the attack by telling voters he would not back Schumer for Majority Leader if he were elected.

The congresswoman defeated Democratic former Gov. Phil Bredesen by closely aligning her bid with President Donald Trump, who drummed up support for her during three visits to the state that he won by 26 percentage points, including a rally alongside Vice President Mike Pence in Chattanooga two days before the election.

Blackburn will be holding her election night event in Franklin.

On Tuesday night, she was happy to claim a piece of Tennessee history for women in the Senate.

"He's been a moderate conservative Democrat his single life", said Geer of Bredesen.

Bredesen had seized on his opponent's weaknesses with his party by running a politically savvy race, ensuring that he distanced himself from the more polarizing figures and stances of his party. He provoked ire from the party after announcing his support for Trump Supreme Court pick Brett Kavanaugh, saying allegations of sexual misconduct "didn't rise to the level" that would exclude him from the bench. "It also overlaps a little with some Republicans, I guess". Bredesen is popular in the state, largely because he brought professional sports teams to Nashville as former Governor. Several networks called that race nearly immediately after polls closed in Tennessee.

"If you like whats going in Washington, and you like this sort of lines in the sand, take no prisoners, I'm not the guy".
