The inclusive midterm victories bode well for future election cycles, said Kimberly Peeler-Allen, co-founder of Higher Heights for America, a national organization focused on galvanizing black women voters and electing black women as candidates. He argued that the reason Democrats won a majority in the House is "not because they went far left", pointing to moderate candidates like Virginia's Abigail Spanberger, who unseated Rep. Dave Brat (R-Va.) in a surprise victory.
"It may be women candidates who save our enthusiasm advantage by mobilizing women voters", Lake said. "But more importantly people got something different".
Rep. Marsha Blackburnbecame the first female senator to represent Tennessee when she outlasted a challenge from former Gov. Phil Bredesen, a Democrat who looked to run against his party to win in a state President Donald Trump won by 26 percentage points in 2016.
She said numerous women and minorities didn't want to be first or make history, but rather wanted change on issues important to them.
"It's a bit of a partisan story", said Rutgers political science professor Kelly Dittmar.
A record number of women from diverse backgrounds have made history in the United States midterm election by being voted into the House of Representatives. By mid-October, 46 percent of men approved but just 36 percent of women. Women's issues are the economy, their education, their gun control.
But while 51 percent of men believe the economy is on the right track, only 37 percent of women do, Reuters/Ipsos polling showed.
In defeating Democrat Phil Bredesen, GOP Rep. Marsha Blackburn will become Tennessee's first woman senator, MA sent the state's first black woman to Congress in Democrat Ayanna Pressley and Texas elected their first two Latinas to Congress, sending Democrats Veronica Escobar of El Paso and Sylvia Garcia of Houston to the House.
Arizona will send a woman - either Democratic representative Kyrsten Sinema or Republican representative Martha McSally - to the Senate for the first time. The confirmation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who was accused by multiple women of sexual misconduct, roiled the election and exposed deep fault lines between the two parties amid a cultural reckoning on sexual assault. But Lake said: "Anger is the most motivating emotion - more than happiness, fear".
Democrats were also much angrier about the Senate's handling of Kavanaugh's confirmation than Republicans or independents.
