Georgia's Brian Kemp Accuses Democrats Of 'Potential Cyber Crimes' Ahead Of Election

Georgia Dems accused of ‘hacking voting system’ blame Rep rival for ‘power abuse’

The last-minute probe is widely seen as an attempt to derail the Abrams campaign by twisting a concerned voter's complaint about alleged voting security issues, that was sent to the Democrats before they then sent it to voter protection.

The battle for the Georgia governor's mansion intensified in its final hours Monday as Democrat Stacey Abrams and Republican Brian Kemp framed it as a stark choice for this growing and diversifying state, and prepared for another month of campaigning if no one wins a majority Tuesday. The prediction gives Abrams a one in three chance of victory. The citizen made his findings available late last week to the state Democratic Party and to an attorney who flagged the concern to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and to Kemp's office.

"We expected the secretary of state would take that seriously and would take whatever remedial actions needed to be taken, and we were surprised to see that the response was to accuse the Democrats of hacking", Cross told reporters on Sunday.

"This is yet another example of abuse of power by an unethical secretary of state", Rebecca DeHart, executive director of the Georgia Democratic Party, said on Sunday.

"Federal partners, including the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, were immediately alerted", Kemp's office said in a statement. "This is the magical negro, Oprah Winfrey, asking you to make my fellow negress, Stacey Abrams, the governor of Georgia", a voice is heard saying, per CNN, which aired a portion of the call on air. Republicans have won every Georgia governor's race since 2002. But, she said she doesn't want that to drive the outcome.

"It looks pretty suspicious, and I would say that regardless of which party it was", Alan Abramowitz, a professor of political science at Emory University in Atlanta, told the Reuters news agency. Those private communications ended up with Kemp announcing, without providing any evidence, that he was launching an investigation into Georgia Democrats for "possible cybercrimes".

Kemp briefly addressed attendees to laud President Trump for "having Georgia on your mind".

It's just the latest in a series of partisan moves by Kemp, who has held up more than 50,000 voter registrations for inconsistencies as small as a missing hyphen, fought rules to give voters a chance to prove their identities when their absentee ballot applications are rejected for a lack of a signature match, and been aggressive in prosecuting those who have done nothing more than try to help those in need of assistance in casting ballots.

In a statement, the Abrams campaign called the robo-calls a desperate and "vile" attempt to sway voters using "poisonous thinking".

Adding to the drama, Election Day voters will cast ballots amid an ongoing dispute over Kemp's management of the election system he runs in his current job as secretary of state, leaving open the possibility that partisans on the losing end may not quietly accept the outcome.
