Man Killed In Whitsundays Shark Attack

He had dived into the water to give the woman her turn on the board when he was attacked, Mr O'Connell said.

Whitsunday is the largest island in the Whitsunday Islands group, a major worldwide tourist attraction popular with scuba divers and sailors where shark attacks have been rare.

Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol boats patrolling Cid Harbour in September.

The 33-year-old had reportedly been swimming off a boat just after 5.30pm on Monday when he was attacked, sustaining significant injuries to his leg and wrist.

They anchored 23 kilometres (14 miles) from Airlie Beach in Cid Harbor, intending to spend their first night in the popular, protected anchorage on Whitsunday Island, the uninhabited largest island in the group, he said.

"When the vessel arrived in Cid Harbour, the man and a woman were taking turns paddle boarding in the water".

"There's just a period of time when conditions are such that it maybe causes attacks to be more frequent".

Ben McCauley, the emergency helicopter crew member, described the incident as "absolutely horrific".

"It's definitely harder this one, it hits home a lot more when you can't go home to your family and say that you've saved another life", he said, according to abc.net.au.

A 46-year-old tourist, Justine Barwick, was attacked on September 19 while swimming from a yacht in Cid Harbor and is recovering.

A schoolgirl from Melbourne, Hannah Papps, subsequently lost her leg in the attack.

The last shark attack in the Whitsunday Islands before the latest spate occurred on February 13, 2010, off Dent Island where 60-year-old tourist Patricia Trumbull survived lacerations to her buttocks and major blood loss.

"It is not practical to permanently operate shark control equipment at this location as it is too far from the mainland to allow quick deployment, access and servicing, or rapid removal in bad weather".

Tourism Whitsundays chief executive Peter O'Reilly had said at the time that the Trumbull attack was the third ever recorded in the islands and the first in 13 years.

Cid Harbour, located in north Queensland's idealic tourism hotspot the Whitsunday Islands, has recently become notorious for shark attacks following the mauling of two people in September this year.

Four tiger sharks were culled from the waters following the attacks and drum lines, which are unmanned aquatic traps used to lure and capture sharks with baited hooks, were additionally laid out by the Queensland state government.
