Man Was 'Huffing' Just Before Crash That Killed 3 Girl Scouts and Adult
A 21-year-old driver was inhaling chemical vapors, or "huffing", just before he is suspected of striking and killing three Girl Scouts and a woman as they picked up roadside litter on November 3 in a hit-and-run crash, police said on November 5.
This photo provided by the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office in Wisconsin shows Colten Treu, who is accused of striking and killing three Girl Scouts and a parent and critically injuring a fourth girl near Chippewa Falls, Wis., Nov. 3, 2018.
Treu and the unidentified passenger of the vehicle both turned themselves into different police departments later Saturday afternoon.
Lake Hallie police said Monday that the deceased were: 9-year-old Jayna Kelley and 10-year-old Autum Helgeson, both of Lake Hallie, and 10-year-old Haylee Hickle and her 32-year-old mother, Sara Jo Schneider, from the Town of Lafayette.
"All members were wearing green highly visible safety vests", Lake Hallie police said in the statement.
Chippewa Falls resident Jill Schafer was in attendance Sunday, along with her son who wore his Boy Scouts uniform, said the news had hit her particularly hard as the mom of two children.
Colten R Treu has been arrested and confined in the Chippewa County Jail on 4 counts of Homicide by Negligent Use of a Motor Vehicle, 5 counts of Hit and Run and 4 counts of Homicide while intoxicated (use of inhalants).
The woman was the mother of one of the girls killed Saturday, police said.
Hundreds of community members held a candlelight vigil on late on November 4 outside Halmstad Elementary, the school the victims had attended. He will be charged with four counts of homicide, Lake Hallie police Sgt. Daniel Sokup said.
A 10-year-old girl was also injured.
Hundreds of community members huddled under umbrellas in the rain Sunday evening for a candlelight vigil outside Halmstad Elementary. A makeshift memorial of teddy bears, balloons and candles was set up on two wooden benches.
Ms Schneider said the deaths of her daughter and granddaughter were "still not real for any of us". She hated bugs, loved reading "Warrior Cats" books, and could sketch "a wonderful picture in 15 minutes or less", Schneider recalled.
In a separate interview with The Associated Press, she said "Haylee would've never made it if she lost her mother".
