Divers see crashed Lion Air jet fuselage as 'ping' heard in search for black box
Indonesian authorities have extended the search at sea for victims of the Lion Air crash and the plane's cockpit voice recorder.
New details about the crashed Lion Air jet's previous flight cast more doubt on the Indonesian airline's claim to have fixed technical problems, as hundreds of personnel searched the sea for a fifth day Friday for victims and the plane's fuselage.
The search and rescue agency (Basarnas) confirmed his death today but did not give a specific cause.
Head of the Indonesian search and rescue team Basarnas, Muhammad Syaugi said: "Deepest condolences for the passing of a humanitarian hero from the Indonesian Diving Rescue Team".
About 100 divers were searching five areas off the coast of the island of Java, said Didi Hamzar with the national search-and-rescue agency.
The search and rescue agency said that 65 body bags with human remains had been taken to a police hospital where forensic doctors have been trying to identify victims.
He also thanked rescue crews for their hard work.
Divers were still hunting for a second black box, the cockpit voice recorder, which officials said was likely buried under more than three feet...
The plane, operating Flight 610, crashed in waters 30 meters (98 feet) deep but strong currents have hampered the search.
Asked about the accuracy of the report, National Transportation Safety Committee deputy head Haryo Satmiko said it had "similarities" with the information received "legally" by investigators. On Thursday, the ministry ordered the suspension of Lion Air managers in charge of quality control and fleet maintenance, as well as the engineer who cleared flight JT610 for take-off. In the context of Indonesia's patchy aviation safety record, however, lawmakers have started to call for a tightening of standards and a government-led audit of the country's airlines. It has been damaged and requires special handling, they say.
Founded in 1999, Lion Air is a budget airline operating in Indonesia and in some parts of Southeast Asia, Australia and the Middle East.
In 2014, an AirAsia crash in the Java Sea during stormy weather killed 162 people.
Its transport safety panel investigated 137 serious aviation incidents from 2012 to 2017. The ban was completely lifted in June.
The accident has also resurrected concerns about Indonesia's poor air safety record which until recently saw its carriers facing years-long bans from entering European Union and United States airspace.
The plane crashed after about 13 minutes after taking off from the airport of Jakarta.
