Melbourne Cup - The Good And The Bad News

A horse has been euthanised after suffering an injury in the Melbourne Cup.

With a likely win pool of over R100 million, the Melbourne Cup, run at 06h00 at Flemington Racecourse on Tuesday morning, offers SA punters a chance to win big.

In 2015, fan favourite Red Cadeaux was euthanised weeks after breaking his leg during the race. Hind limb injury caused 17 deaths.

Online sports-betting sites crashed nationwide in the lead-up to the Melbourne Cup, the busiest betting event of the year.

"The day was sponsored by Dubai Racing Club, that was the day I rode four winners, I won the trip away and rode four winners and that put my name under the nose of Sheikh Mohammed and rode for them later in that spring late in 2002, that is where it all started", he said.

In a statement the RSPCA said there was a growing number of Australians who felt uncomfortable watching horse racing.

Horse trainer Aidan O'Brien has confirmed that his colt The Cliffsofmoher died during the Melbourne Cup.

"This is a race we have been trying to win for years and I'm just fortunate to turn up with the right horse".

McEvoy narrowly avoided the incident involving The Cliffsofmoher but admitted in the post-race press conference that he settled further back in the field than he desired.

British stayer Cross Counter won the 158th running of the Melbourne Cup, handing the powerful Godolphin stable a first win in Australia's most famous horse race after 20 years of frustration. The Cliffsofmoher suffered a fractured right shoulder when injured in the Melbourne Cup, unfortunately could not be saved.

Parties galore are also in store across Perth, some of the biggest being held at Market Grounds, Henry Summer, The Stables, The Bach Club and, of course, Crown Perth, which previous year hosted 24,000 WA racing fans on Cup day and expects even more today.

Described as a "tragedy" by veteran Seven commentator Bruce McAvaney, the United Kingdom raider pulled up lame as the field passed the finishing post for the first time.
