On Friday, the Saudi-led coalition claimed to have been responsible for an attack on Sanaa International Airport and an adjoining air base being used by Houthi insurgents.

"The operation targeted ballistic missile launch-and-storage sites, UAV [unmanned aerial vehicle] ground stations, bomb-making facilities and affiliated logistical-support sites at Sanaa's Al-Dailami Airbase", the SPA quoted coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki as saying, as reported by Anadolu Agency (AA).

Col. Al-Maliki reaffirmed that the Sanaa International Airport is still open to United Nations and relief air traffic, and that all preventative measures were taken in the targeting operation.

Calling the attacked structures "legitimate military targets", Malki said he will provide "evidence" of violations by the Iran-aligned Huthi rebels later Friday.

Nebenzia said United Nations special envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths, is "working on a peace plan that might bring the parties together and finally finish this useless conflict" and Russian Federation wants to hear from him "on new avenues that he's exploring".

Meanwhile, fighting broke out early on Friday in a southern district of Hodeidah, residents and military sources said.

Yemen has been at war since March 2015 when Houthi rebels occupied northern regions and forced the government into exile. The killing prompted critics to urge an end to American arms sales to the kingdom and a reappraisal of US military support for the Saudi-led Arab coalition that has been bombing Iranian-supported Houthi rebels, sometimes at the expense of killing civilians.

He visited the Red Sea port city of Hodeida and the rebel-held capital, Sanaa, over the past two days as clashes and airstrikes intensified.

Washington, a close Saudi ally, backs coalition forces by refuelling their jets and selling them weapons.

The kingdom's ties with the West have been strained by the furore over the killing of a prominent Saudi journalist at Riyadh's consulate in Istanbul on October 2, and its conduct in the Yemen war, in which hundreds of civilians have been killed in airstrikes, has also come under closer scrutiny.

According to the World Health Organization, almost 10,000 people have since been killed.

Despite a high-profile modernisation drive aimed at improving Saudi Arabia's image and attracting foreign investment, rights groups have detailed a crackdown on activists, increase in executions and discrimination against the Shiite minority.
