Hall Of Fame Slugger Willie McCovey Dies At Age 80

He had been in a wheel chair for several years, and underwent multiple surgeries on his knees - one of which stemmed an infection in 2014 and almost killed him.

Since 1980, the Giants have presented the "Willie Mac Award" to the player who "best exemplifies the spirit and leadership shown by McCovey throughout his long career". He spent another two and a half with the Padres and had a brief stint with the Athletics. He was a six-time All-Star who finished his career with a.270 batting average, 521 home runs and 1,555 RBIs. Currently, he is tied for 20th place on the all-time home run leaderboard with Frank Thomas and Ted Williams.

The next year, McCovey won the first of three NL home run titles by belting 44 long balls - a season that also earned him his first of six All-Star Game selections. With runners at second and third and two outs, the man nicknamed "Stretch" came to the plate with the Giants trailing the New York Yankees 1-0 in the seventh and deciding game of the 1962 World Series. Legendary hitter Willie McCovey, who totaled 521 home runs in his illustrious career, and was constantly around AT&T Park in recent years, died today.

McCovey made his major league debut at age 21 on July 30, 1959 and played alongside the other Willie - Hall of Famer Willie Mays - into the 1972 season before Mays was traded to the New York Mets that May. About her father, Allison said: "I am grateful that my father passed peacefully surrounded by his family and friends while listening to his favorite sports channel".

Born in Mobile, Alabama, McCovey went on to be a three-time National League home run leader and twice led the league in RBI. "Willie was a beloved figure throughout his playing days and in retirement".

Though most of their trips out of the house were so he could watch the Giants' home games as their senior advisor, their relationship was characterized by "love and laughter".

Called "the scariest hitter in baseball" by Hall of Famer Bob Gibson, McCovey was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1986. "Living life without him will never be the same".

McCovey is survived by his sister Frances and his brothers, Clauzell and Cleon. Seeing San Francisco in the Fall Classic again brought those smiles back to McCovey's face even more.

A public celebration of Willie's life will be announced at a later date.
