Blizzard’s Warcraft 3 is finally getting the remastered treatment

03 November 2018, 12:01 | Jodi Jackson

Diablo, Blizzard's longest running title, has just announced a move to mobile at Blizzcon. But they prepared wrong, and instead saw Diablo Immortal.

Stilwell concluded the presentation with a brief summation of Warcraft 3's influence, both on Blizzard's pantheon of games and on the industry more generally. All classes bring new abilities and powers, according to Blizzard, which revealed the game today as part of its BlizzCon announcements.

As for what to expect, Blizzard said its mission was to present World of Warcraft as it existed in 2005 and 2006 before Cataclysm "altered the world as we knew it".

"Diablo Immortal" will pick up five years after the obliteration of the ultra-powerful worldstone, which has the power to create new worlds. There will also be new zones, new stories, and new dungeons to play through. And, true enough, the onstage announcement showed off Barbarian, Crusader, Demon Hunter, Necormancer, Wizard and Monk classes.

It's an interesting and ambitious take on the franchise, but fan reaction is already mixed. This question was met with unfortunate cheers from some of the crowd who must also have felt slighted that this video game didn't immediately appear to appeal to their personal tastes. One audience member asked if it was an "out of season April Fool's joke". Players will travel places like the haunted temples of Bilefen, the Forgotten Tower, as well as the game's capital city of Westmarch. "We're walking around with full-fledged gaming devices in our pocket and we want to make a full-fledged game for mobile". There were even rumors regarding Blizzard working on a Diablo tabletop-esque game for PC. The team says it will be available "when it's ready".

Only a handful of hours after the Opening Ceremony - and two hours after the WoW 'What's Next?' panel at BlizzCon - the price of WoW tokens in North America jumped up a whopping 15.33%, or +17,246 gold.

Orphea is the first hero in the long-running crossover MMO to be completely new, not from any previous Blizzard franchise.
