30 October 2018, 10:16 | Justin Tyler
This tropical disturbance will likely become the next named storm in the Atlantic
Oscar has transitioned from a subtropical storm into a tropical storm and now may become a hurricane soon.
Oscar, the 15th named storm this season, was about 815 miles east-southeast of Bermuda and 780 miles northeast of the Northern Leeward Islands, the National Hurricane Center said in its 5 a.m. advisory.
The storm was moving to the west at 12 miles per hour (19 kph).
Oscar is the eighth hurricane this season, and is projected to take a north-northeasterly track over the next two days.
The Bermuda Weather Service said the storm was moving west at about 19.5 mph with winds of more than 64 mph and gusts of 79 mph.
NHC forecasters say that a westward to west-southwestward motion with an increase in forward speed is expected today and tonight, followed by a reduction in speed on Sunday. Oscar already packs sustained winds around 60 miles per hour. Regardless of strength, Hurricane Oscar is not expected to be a threat to land.
Oscar quickly grew from a tropical storm Saturday to a hurricane Sunday.
Oscar is forecast to continue to strengthen through Monday night, then gradually weaken in the open Atlantic.
