Pokémon Go Brings Step-Count Tracking Feature In Its New Update

28 October 2018, 11:52 | Jodi Jackson

Pokemon Go Gets Adventure Sync, Allows for Background Steps Counting

New Pokémon Go feature makes exercise enticing

The new feature will sync in the background with iOS HealthKit and Android Google Fit, and will also offer a weekly fitness summary that records distance traveled on foot, steps counted, and calories burned according to players' devices.

Users will be able to opt into Adventure Sync at any time once the feature becomes available. The game-making company recently announced that it is moving all of its location-based games to the same platform for rolling out similar features. Niantic is now introducing a feature called "Adventure Sync" which will count steps even when the phone is in your pocket. And just in time, too, because you'll be able to trade in all that Halloween candy calories for in-game sweets.

The software now communicates with Apple Health or Google Fit.

Adventure Sync will record activity and movement in the background during the regular morning commutes, walks around town, or even evening jogs to let players earn rewards like Candy found by Buddy Pokémon or Eggs hatching more efficiently.

This is a huge move for Pokemon Go, one that will encourage players to not only keep exercising and stay engaged with the game.

Exploring with Pokémon GO has never been easier with a new feature coming soon! Up to now, the only way for the app to track your steps, which was a crucial part of advancing gameplay, was with your phone awake and the app open (or use the Pokemon Go Plus tracker).

So far in 2018, Trainers have already walked an astonishing 53 percent more while playing Pokémon GO than they did in 2017. Additionally, when a partner Pokemon finds sweets or an egg hatches, push notifications will be sent to your device.
