U.S. brands falter in Consumer Reports auto reliability survey

Consumer Reports reveals most, least reliable cars

Consumer Reports is out with its rankings of automobile brands based on reliability.

In the case of Tesla, the Model S luxury electric auto fell from "above average" reliability to "below average" as readers reported trouble with the air suspension and door handles that extend from the body when the driver approaches.

Lexus and Toyota led the pack for the sixth straight year, with Lexus showing predictive reliability across all models. The Model X was again called "much worse than average", with its falcon-wing doors a continued source of reliability woes for some owners. It was among the 10 worst cars in the entire survey, with a wide range of problems including in-car electronics, body hardware, noises and leaks.

"With this added complexity, it's not surprising to see some brands struggling to get them right, particularly the ones that don't have a long history of producing turbos", Fisher said. GM did have a few bright spots.

Toyota's namesake brand was ranked second, down from first, with its Prius C named the most reliable model.

Mazda, Subaru and Kia round out the top five.

At the other end of the spectrum, the list of the 10 least reliable brands consists of nine American brands. The ranking is a drop of six places for the company compared to last year's list. Tesla, for example, made air suspension and all-wheel drive standard on the 2017 Model S, and it affected the car's reliability. CR now recommends the Cadillac XTS, Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Suburban, Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, Infiniti QX60, Lincoln Continental, Mazda CX-9, Mazda MX-5 Miata, Mini Cooper, Mini Cooper Countryman, Nissan Armada, Nissan Maxima, Subaru Impreza, Volkswagen Golf and Volkswagen Tiguan.

The top-rated brand, Lexus, received a score of 78.

Honda turns in mixed results, landing at 15, which is six spots lower from the year prior. However, Acura seems to have worked out recent trouble spots with its new transmissions and infotainment systems. Its overall rating dropped it off the publication's "recommended" list. Hyundai comes in at number 10, and its luxury Genesis brand is close behind.

Their survey collects data from Consumer Reports members about their experiences with more than half a million vehicles.
