AI-generated painting sells for $432,000 at auction

Portrait by AI program sells for $432,000

It sold during the October 23-25 Prints & Multiples sale at Christie's, making it the first piece of AI art to go under the hammer at a major auction house, Christie's said.

The painting on canvas depicts the portrait of a portly gentleman, possibly a Frenchman from a church judged by his dark frockcoat and plain white collar, Christie's said in a press release.

The work from the French art collective Obvious was made using a machine-learning algorithm that scanned historical artwork to create composites. And more broadly, when an algorithm is used to create a piece of art, who owns it-the person who wrote the algorithm, or the person who put it to that specific objective?

The artwork was produced by a Paris-based art collective called Obvious using an algorithm known as Generative Adversarial Networks.

"Artificial intelligence is just one of those technologies that will affect the art market of the future".

"The aim is to fool the Discriminator into thinking that the new images are real-life portraits", explained Hugo Caselles- Dupré, one of the collective members. Algorithm before creating the paintings studied about 15 thousand portraits created during the period of XIV-XX centuries. But they say humans will probably stick around to create portraits too. The Generator makes a new image based on the set, then the Discriminator tries to spot the difference between a human-made image and one created by the Generator.

"The goal is to force the discriminator to think that the new images are true portraits". While it has changed the way people interact, art is also seeing a transformation thanks to innovations like artificial intelligence.

"I think that's what happens when you are doing something and nobody cares, then you're just goofing around and you are really inconsistent. For us it was just a amusing way to talk about it".

The signature on the painting is the actual algorithm used to create it.
