Pediatricians suggest getting flu shot by Halloween

The department vaccinated dozens of town employees, including most department heads in what was touted as the "Flu Shots for Big Shots" vaccination campaign. Public health officials recommend that everyone get vaccinated this month. Getting the shot not only helps protect those who receive it, but also vulnerable populations, such as infants, who can't be vaccinated and are more likely to experience serious health effects from the flu.

"We're all very open about the fact that the flu vaccine is not the greatest vaccine and we really need to make improvements in it", he said.

"Additionally, we recommend that women who are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant get their flu vaccine", Lund said. Again, it takes about two weeks for the vaccine to kick in, and people often get the vaccination during cold and flu season.

"The theme of the influenza vaccine campaign this year is Fight Flu". It was the disease's highest death toll in at least four decades. Last year, the most casualties were young and elderly people.

The department says, the vaccine is the best defense against the flu.

"Each flu season is different and unpredictable", Steward said. "There were a number of deaths previous year during the flu season and I'd like not to die from the flu".

"The flu is not just a cold".

Doctors are encouraging children to get their flu shots by Halloween.

They are holding flu clinics to offer free vaccines.

"With any medication or vaccine, people are going to have concerns", said Dr. Jean Moorjani, a board-certified pediatrician at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, in a news release.

Repeating the message, "It's impossible for the flu vaccine to give you the flu", infectious disease expert Amesh A. Adalja, MD, senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, tells Yahoo Lifestyle.
