A Drug-Resistant Salmonella Outbreak Has Been Reported in 29 States–Here's What to Know

Raw chicken causing Salmonella outbreak in Pennsylvania and 28 states

Ninety-two people from 29 states have been sickened in a salmonella outbreak linked to raw chicken, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports.

The chicken is not coming from one source that they have been able to identify.

New Jersey (9 cases) and MA (9 cases) are among the worst hit of the 29 states in the outbreak of the multidrug-resistant strain, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials said.

The CDC said on Thursday that it is seeing 92 cases of salmonella from raw chicken products, including everything from pet food to chicken tenders.

The CDC and U.S. Department of Agriculture have shared the information with chicken industry officials. However, diarrhea for some people may be so severe that they need to be hospitalized. The outbreak, which has thus far infected 92 people, has been linked to a variety of raw chicken products from multiple sources.

According to the CDC, "ill people reported preparing or eating chicken products that were purchased raw, including ground chicken, chicken pieces, and whole chicken".

- There is an outbreak of drug-resistant salmonella in 29 states including NY and New Jersey. "This outbreak is a reminder to always handle raw chicken carefully and to cook chicken to an internal temperature of 165°F to prevent food poisoning". Don't wash chicken before you cook it, as doing so can spread germs to other surfaces.

People sick with this strain have experienced stomach pain, cramps, diarrhea and fever 12 to 72 hours after exposure to the bacteria. Use a separate cutting board for raw chicken and other raw meats if possible. It is also suggested you don't feel raw diets to pets.
