North Texas Children Among Those With Rare Polio-Like Illness

For 7 year-old Quinton Hill of Lakeville, AFM has left him with paralysis in his left arm.

You can protect against bites from mosquitoes, which can carry West Nile virus, by using mosquito repellent, staying indoors at dusk and dawn (when bites are more common), and removing standing or stagnant water near your home (where mosquitoes can breed).

Doctors are warning that a mysterious and paralyzing child illness similar to polio has spread to Chicago.

There have been no deaths in Colorado and all patients have fully recovered after being hospitalized, 9News.com reported.

Five of the state's known patients have been diagnosed in North Texas, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services.

All the children showed systems of a respiratory illness the week before developing symptoms of AFM. Its origins are a mystery, but officials say a virus can cause some cases.

The CDC has recorded 362 official cases of acute flaccid myelitis in the USA between August 2014 through August 2018. The cause of any individual case of AFM can be hard to determine, and often, no cause is found. CDC specialists will make the final determination if these cases are AFM. But those aren't the only signs: Other symptoms can include eyelid or facial drooping, difficulty moving the eyes, difficulty swallowing and slurred speech, according to the state health department. "There's children who are so sick they have trouble breathing and need breathing support", Hill added.

There is no treatment for this disease.

The family of a baby diagnosed with a rare condition is sharing their story in hopes of helping other parents. Nationwide, the CDC has confirmed 362 AFM cases between August 2014 and August 2018.

There is no specific treatment for AFM, but a doctor who specializes in treating brain and spinal cord illnesses (neurologist) may recommend certain interventions on a case-by-case basis.

CBS 11 News reached out to Cook Children's for more information, but so far the hospital has only confirmed three cases of AFM and that they're looking at a suspected fourth case. "This is a very rare condition", he stresses.
