A proposed deal between the Heat and Wolves fell apart over the weekend, but there has been hope among the Minnesota front office, coaching staff and some teammates that Butler would rejoin the team. Miami is still the most likely destination, but it will require owner Glen Taylor stepping up. Which was probably part of Butler's goal (that and he is frustrated the deal isn't done, even though the timing of his declaration, September 18 right before camps opened, screwed Minnesota over). The Rockets and Suns were ready to dip their toe into the Butler market. Welcome to a new season of Timberwolves basketball.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the Heat remain interested in restarting trade talks with the Wolves after the deal that seemed close to happening collapsed on Saturday.

"Outside of the Heat, the Timberwolves have had no serious, active talks with any other team", ESPN reported in a separate story.

Apparently, a deal can't come soon enough for Butler. The Athletic made the outlook of a trade sound grim, however. According to Krawczyinski, Minnesota is "making preparations to start the season with Butler on the roster".

Butler showed up for his first practice of the preseason on Wednesday, and he didn't exactly opt to blend in with his Timberwolves' teammates.

Sources told Wojnarowski that Butler was emotional and targeted head coach Tom Thibodeau and general manager Scott Layden, as well as teammates Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns.

"You f-ing need me".
