Microsoft puts Windows 10 update on hold after file deletion reports

Microsoft can recover lost files Windows 10 October 2018 Update - But You Need To Call Them

When the October 2018 Update was installed the original "old" folder was deleted including the files in that folder (in this example c:\users\username\documents would be deleted; d:\documents, the new location, would be preserved). Based on feedback from users, we introduced code in the October 2018 Update to remove these empty, duplicate known folders.

After having to embarrassingly halt the rollout of its big new October 2018 Update for Windows 10 late last week - just days after its original release - Microsoft has today said that it's squashed the file-deleting bug that was the cause for the pause, and is preparing to redeploy the update pending testing by Windows Insiders. Previously the company only advised users to not install the update.

An updated version of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update is distributed to Insider Channels. If there are still files in the "Documents" folder then you're not affected by the issue, according to another tweet from Sarkar. In addition to pulling the update, Microsoft kicked off an investigation into the matter, ultimately finding the problem. Therefore, they are suggesting that users use their PCs as little as possible so that deleted files are not overwritten with new data. "That change, combined with another change to the update construction sequence, resulted in the deletion of the original "old" folder locations and their content, leaving only the new "active" folder intact". The company has released Windows 10 cumulative updates to several previous versions of the operating system, including the April 2018 Update, Fall Creators Update, Creators Update, and the Anniversary Update.

The fixed versions of Windows are getting floated in Microsoft's Windows Insider Program, which is a program for software testers.

To help our customers that may be impacted by this issue, Microsoft Support is assisting customers and trying to recover data for users who may have experienced related data loss.

John Cable, Director of Program Management, Windows Servicing and Delivery penned a long blog post to explain what went wrong during testing. "We have added an ability for users to also provide an indication of impact and severity when filing User Initiated Feedback".
