The Walking Dead's Season 9 Premiere Is One of Its Lowest Ever

10 October 2018, 09:40 | Myron Mathis

Specifically, its key 18-49 demographic had a historically low turnout, reportedly rating lower than any other season premiere in the series and tying with the lowest scoring rating of any episode of The Walking Dead in this demographic.

Goldman Sachs downgraded AMC to a sell from a neutral rating late last week, and yesterday the stock fell more than 7% after the premiere numbers were released.

The previous demo low for a premiere, 2.7, was held by the October 2010 series launch, which in total audience drew 5.4 million viewers. In comparison, the Season 8 premiere brought in 11.44 million viewers.

This season's premiere is also flirting with a tie for the series low in the key demo, which was a 2.4 set back during Season 1.

Compared to the Season 8 "Wrath" finale of April 15, "A New Beginning" fell 23 % in total viewers and 27% among 18-49s.

Though these numbers show a stark downward trend for AMC, its Premiere online subscription service had its biggest single day for new signups after the premiere episode was made available a full day prior to its televised debut.

Similar to how the likes of the already well watched Starz drama has carved out a greater audience by dropping new episodes at midnight on Sundays for fans who sign up for the premium cabler's app, AMC gave TWD fans an early bite on the show's season premiere for the very first time this weekend. It was the top-rated show on Sunday night by a landslide, and according to AMC, the premiere also brought in the highest day of new sign-ups in the history of the channel's premieres.

We may find out exactly how many fans that was later this week if AMC provide some of that AMC Premiere data with Live + 3 numbers.

The ninth season of The Walking Dead will mark leading actor Andrew Lincoln's final run with the series.
