Hurricane Michael Menaces Florida After Killing 13 in Central America

"#Michael could produce three life-threatening hazards along portions of the northeastern Gulf Coast: storm surge, heavy rainfall, and hurricane-force winds, with storm surge and hurricane watches in effect", the NHC said on Twitter.

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, Florida's Democratic nominee for governor, had planned to campaign in South Florida on Monday and Tuesday, but instead threw himself into helping his city's residents fill sandbags and get their storm preparations completed.

Michael was now a Category 1 hurricane but could become a Category 3 storm by Tuesday on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale, with winds of at least 100 miles per hour (160 km per hour).

Michael was upgraded to a hurricane Monday and is expected to strengthen to a Category 3 hurricane before reaching the Panhandle and Big Bend area on Wednesday.

According to the NHC, Michael will likely make landfall early Wednesday morning, and is "forecast to be a risky major hurricane".

The National Hurricane center says the storm is expected to become a major hurricane by Tuesday night.

After striking Florida, Michael is forecast to move up the East Coast on October 10 and October 11 plowing through the Carolinas, still recovering from Hurricane Florence last month. A storm surge of up to 12 feet is forecast for a large section of the Florida coast.

Florida State University and Florida A&M University announced they will be canceling classes for the rest of the week, meaning many students will likely be taking to the roads to escape the storms path. "Do not risk your life, leave NOW if you were told to do so", the NWS in Tallahassee, Florida, tweeted Wednesday morning.

Tropical Storm Michael is seen in the Gulf of Mexico in this NOAA GOES-East satellite image taken Monday. The threat along the coast includes serious storm surge.

Floridians scurried to prepare after Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency for 26 counties and activated 1,250 National Guardsmen for hurricane duty.

By 5 p.m. Monday, Michael's top sustained winds were around 80 miles per hour. Tallahassee is located about 30 miles from the coast, and within the projected forecast "cone", according to the National Hurricane Center.

"I haven't made up my mind yet, but I know some of my staff are going", said Dave Trepanier, owner of Firefly, a restaurant a block from the beach in Panama City, Bay County, an area where the hurricane is expected to come ashore. Michael was now a Category 1 hurricane, at the bottom of the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale. The latest track from the NHC shows Michael as a category 1 hurricane entering the southwestern edge of central Georgia at 2 AM Thursday morning. The weather advisory warned of potential mudslides in Cuba and life-threatening flash floods for areas of Florida, the mid-Atlantic states and ranging up to southern New England.

Insurance companies Monday began to brace for the storm, bringing a pause to the writing of new homeowners insurance policies until the warning is lifted, as is standard before natural disasters. "The potentially worst impact will be the storm surge".
