How will Tropical Storm Michael affect North Carolina?
10 October 2018, 04:33 | Erica Roy
Hurricane Michael enhances DC rain threat this week
Winds were forecast to drop in intensity as the system tracks northeast over Alabama, Georgia and SC, reaching North Carolina by Thursday. Now-Tropical Storm Michael now sits off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.
Wind shear, which has slowed the storm's development so far, is forecast to relax, which should also enable the storm to gain strength.
Michael's maximum sustained winds had reached 70 miles per hour, it said.
Hurricane Michael strengthened to a major, Category 3 hurricane Tuesday afternoon as it roared toward Florida's Gulf Coast, threatening to wreak historic devastation on a state walloped by Hurricane Irma's historic rage 13 months ago.
A tropical storm that rapidly formed off Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula has gained new strength and could become a unsafe Category 2 hurricane with an expected midweek strike on the Gulf Coast in the Florida Panhandle, forecasts say.
Michael will move across the eastern Gulf of Mexico through Tuesday night. Michael is moving toward the north at 5.0 miles per hour (7.0 kph), with maximum sustained winds of 60 miles per hour (95 kph) and a minimum central pressure that has fallen to 997 MB or 29.44 inches. If the forecast is correct, Michael would be the 11th major hurricane to hit Florida in October since records began in 1851, Colorado State University meteorologist Phil Klotzbach said.
Hurricane force winds extend 45 miles outside the center, and tropical storm force winds extend outwards 175 miles.
The Commodity Weather Group said on Sunday there might be some precautionary evacuation of oil rigs in the area affected by the storm, which may slow down operations but not likely cause much interruption.
Florida's governor mobilized National Guard troops and ordered Gulf Coast residents to head inland or get ready to evacuate as Hurricane Michael churned toward shore on Monday, with the storm forecast to strengthen rapidly before making landfall on Wednesday.
A Hurricane Watch has been issued from the Alabama-Florida border eastward to the Suwannee River.
It added TD 14 was expected to continue moving north with an increase in forward speed. Isolated maximum amounts of 12 inches are possible in western Cuba. Andrew Gillum, the Democratic mayor of Tallahassee who is vying to succeed Scott as the state's governor, has called off campaign events on Monday and Tuesday to focus on storm preparation, CNN reported.
Chris Holcomb and the 11Alive Storm Trackers team will have full coverage all week of Tropical Hurricane Michael and bring you full details on what sort of effects it will have on our weather in and across the state of Georgia.

Mbappe scored four times in 13 minutes on Sunday but also missed a number of chances, which does not surprise Griezmann. The 30-man shortlist for the annual award is separate from FIFA's The Best award, which was won by Luka Modric.
