Mild to moderate flu season expected for Manitoba, says province's medical officer of health
Introduced previous year, the high-dose vaccine may provide better protection for those at increased risk of complications from the flu, potentially reducing the number of outbreaks experienced in long-term care facilities.
The University Department of Student Health offered its annual flu shot clinic for students on Tuesday, Oct. 2. It turned out that even though the normal vaccine is made in an egg-based culture, people who are allergic to eggs aren't allergic to the vaccine, she said. "The flu vaccine is free for those most at risk, so if that's you make an appointment to receive the vaccine as soon as possible".
As for children, health official recommend consulting with a pediatrician first. It's important to note, however, that studies have shown only 1 to 2 percent of people who get the flu shot will experience a negative reaction.
In addition to the single day that the vaccinations were offered, the flu clinic was not extensively advertised to students - two emails were sent out, one on September 28 and another on the day of the clinic.
The CDC continues to encourage people to get vaccinated throughout the flu season, which can begin as early as October and last as late as May. People now have the option of getting the nasal spray vaccine this season instead of a needle.
Flu vaccines help your body create weapons, called antibodies, that help fight the virus when you're exposed to it. "Maybe (one year) it was a good year for the recombinant vaccine, but maybe the next year it's no better than the regular".
Remember, some folks think the flu is any gastrointestinal illness - that's a common misconception.
Dr. Raj Bhardwaj told CBC Radio's The Morning Edition this year's flu season could be mild.
"The majority of students treated for the flu at the Student Health Service past year had not received the vaccine", said Garcia. I mean, last year we had a bad influenza year - killed 80,000 people, and accounted for 900,000 hospitalizations.
He said the manufacturers of the flu shot use a process to weaken or kill the flu virus but preserve portions of it beforehand.
Health officials are urging people to get vaccinated by the end of this month.
It is impossible to predict the severity of a flu season, and it's also not possible to reliably predict which strains of the flu will be circulating, according to the CDC. Its vaccine, created with genetic sequencing and grown with tobacco, can be retrofitted to immunize against nearly any virus so long as its DNA can be obtained. Hand washing helps stop the spread of germs.
This year, new locations were added to the list of vaccination sites, including the Business School and the Eaton Residential College patio.
