Intel reveals new 9th gen Core CPUs, led by Core i9-9900K

Dropping Hyper-Threading could be a nod towards improving security on its processors related to Spectre and Meltdown, or it could have been an adjustment to improve product segmentation to create a larger gap between the Core i7 and Core i9 families.

Intel has dropped hyper-threading on its lower-end, budget processor before, but this is a high-end processor meant for gamers and creatives.

Stepping down the ladder, we find the Core i7-9700K.

Intel launched its first 8th-generation Core processors past year with U-series mobile chips that were really just 7th-generation parts with the double the normal number of cores.

This gives the Core i9-9900K an all-core boost of 4.7GHz, which should give that chip a nice nudge over all previous CPUs in the family.

The top-end Core i9-9900K boasts 8C/16T with a base frequency of 3.6GHz and boost of 5.0GHz. This is quite a different configuration to its predecessor, the Core i7-8700K with 6C/12T but the same base Coffee Lake architecture.

The new Core i9-9900K marks the first time that Intel is using its Core i9 brand for a mainstream desktop CPU, supplanting the usual top-spec Core i7 model.

The supporting act today is the Core i5-9600K, with six cores but no Hyperthreading.

Intel is using a Solder Thermal Interface Material (STIM) on the new 9900K, something that should make some people happy with integrated USB 3.1 gen 2 and integrated Intel Wireless-AC connectivity. It's a 255W processor with 68 PCIe lanes, a 38.5MB Smart Cache and six-channel DDR4 memory support with up to 512GB at 2666MHz, and four channels of DDR4-2666 memory. Intel is launching a new chipset with these parts - Z390 - but has confirmed that all the news parts are fully compatible with existing 300-series chipsets via the LGA 1151 socket.

The new Xeon W-3175X sports 28 cores and 56 threads with a base clock speed of 3.1GHz and a maximum clock speed of 4.3GHz.

We will be updating this post with more details regarding the new 9th Gen Intel Core processors once we go through the in-depth information provided by Intel.
