SpaceX Aces First-Ever Rocket Landing in California After Spectacular Satellite Launch

Two streaks in this long exposure

SpaceX completed the secondary mission of landing the first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket at Landing Zone 4, which was previously called SLC-4W, at Vandenberg Air Force Base.

It will be SpaceX's first time trying to land one of its reusable rockets on the West Coast. Falcon 9 launch was the company 30th successful landing of the rocket booster.

In metro Phoenix, witnesses hit up social media with photos and videos of the peculiar streak of light and ghostlike images they saw.

It's the very first time SpaceX (or anyone) has successfully landed a rocket on the West Coast. It, too, found success in landing at a new site north of Los Angeles.

The Air Force said before the 7:22 p.m. launch that it expected that people as far away as Sacramento and Southern California would see the rocket's contrail.

Argentina's satellite will reportedly track natural disasters, crop yields and soil-moisture levels from 385 miles (620km) above the earth.

Two minutes and 20 seconds after liftoff, now well out of the dense lower atmosphere, the Merlin engines shut down, the first stage was jettisoned and a single engine powering the Falcon 9's second stage ignited for a planned 10-minute burn. Boosters are shorter-burning rocket motors/engines that are used alongside the main rockets to augment the space vehicle's takeoff thrust and payload capacity during initial stage launch.

The SAOCOM launch marks SpaceX's 17th launch of the year.

Later, SpaceX reported that the SAOCOM 1A radar satellite was placed in its proper pole-to-pole orbit.

SAOCOM 1, together with the Italian COSMO-SkyMed X-Band SAR constellation, make up the Italian-Argentine Satellite System for Emergency Management, or SIASGE.
