Officials warn against Facebook hoax messages

Some users are being duped into thinking that their accounts have been cloned due to a viral message that says the sender got a duplicate friend request from the recipient. "And you didn't receive a request from the person you're forwarding it to", officials in Louisiana warned in a public service message on Facebook.

If you are an avid Facebook user, you've probably noticed that quite a few of the people on your friends' list have been posting that they've gotten hacked.

If you're concerned however, you can check whether your account has been cloned by typing your name into the Facebook search bar. The message then instructs the user to "hold your finger on the message until the forward button appears...then hit forward..." It then urges you to then forward on the message.

Facebook says there has been no known uptick in cloned accounts this week, when the messages started circulating, WSYR reported.

Facebook also said this was not connected to last week's security breach.

Have you, like everyone else on Facebook, been encountering an abundance of messages about possible hacks in the past day?

"However, at risk of stating the obvious, sending a second friend request warning is only helpful if you have received a second friend request from someone. Please forward to all your contacts", the message reads. "And you certainly should check it out so that you can take action to protect yourself and your friends if your account really has been cloned", he wrote.
