India quietly seals missile deal with Russian Federation despite United States warning

PM Modi Russian President Vladimir Putin sign deal for supply of S-400 missiles to India

Russian Federation remains India's top weapons supplier, and the United States is number two.

India's Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) Videsh (International), which is tasked for oil and gas exploration overseas, is raising stakes in Russia's far east. "Russia has always been with us in the development journey of India".

"Our countries have mutual benefits in supporting struggle against terrorism, Afghanistan and Indo-Pacific events, climate change, organisations like SCO, BRICS, G20 and ASEAN". He added that the two would continue cooperation at global groups such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, BRICS, G-20 and the Association of South East Asian Nations. "It was used before also when sanctions were in place" said Slepnev.

India has also developed closer defence ties to the U.S.in recent years with joint military drills and defence sales. However, the USA is in a hard position when it comes to India. The two countries set a target of $30 billion bilateral trade by 2025, and Mr. Putin invited Mr. Modi to Vladivostok for the economic forum in September 2019. Last month the two countries signed a major military accord which will allow India to receive state-of-the-art communications equipment from the U.S.

President Vladimir Putin sought Friday, October 5, to nail down billions of dollars worth of arms deals with India, as New Delhi walks a tightrope between Moscow and Washington with a wary eye on China.

The S-400 surface-to-air missile system is capable of tracking and taking down aircraft hundreds of miles away, and India believes it needs it to defend the country against not only China but also Pakistan. It can be deployed within five minutes, and is capable of firing three types of missiles to create a layered defence, according to News18. The S-400 deliveries are expected to begin in two years. If India successfully launches the Gaganyaan mission, it will be the fourth nation to do so after the United States, Russia and China.

The S-400 is also armed with an improved variant of the 48N6E2 with an alleged range of 250 kilometers (160 miles). The missile system, manufactured by Almaz-Antey, has been in service in Russian Federation since 2007.

"The sides welcomed the conclusion of the contract for the supply of the S-400 long-range surface-to-air missile system to India", a joint Indian-Russian statement said.

In Washington, a State Department Spokesperson had said on Wednesday "We urge all of our allies and partners to forgo transactions with Russian Federation that would trigger sanctions under CAATSA", when asked about India's plan to purchase multi-billion S-400 missile defense system from Russian Federation. Reportedly, there is a trade deal in motion between the two countries which India has initiated.
