India has also developed closer defence ties to the U.S.in recent years with joint military drills and defence sales. However, the USA is in a hard position when it comes to India. The two countries set a target of $30 billion bilateral trade by 2025, and Mr. Putin invited Mr. Modi to Vladivostok for the economic forum in September 2019. The S-400 surface-to-air missile system is capable of tracking and taking down aircraft hundreds of miles away, and India believes it needs it to defend the country against not only China but also Pakistan. It can be deployed within five minutes, and is capable of firing three types of missiles to create a layered defence, according to News18. The S-400 deliveries are expected to begin in two years. If India successfully launches the Gaganyaan mission, it will be the fourth nation to do so after the United States, Russia and China.
The S-400 is also armed with an improved variant of the 48N6E2 with an alleged range of 250 kilometers (160 miles). The missile system, manufactured by Almaz-Antey, has been in service in Russian Federation since 2007.
"The sides welcomed the conclusion of the contract for the supply of the S-400 long-range surface-to-air missile system to India", a joint Indian-Russian statement said.
In Washington, a State Department Spokesperson had said on Wednesday "We urge all of our allies and partners to forgo transactions with Russian Federation that would trigger sanctions under CAATSA", when asked about India's plan to purchase multi-billion S-400 missile defense system from Russian Federation. Reportedly, there is a trade deal in motion between the two countries which India has initiated.
