Wife of former Malaysian PM Najib charged with money laundering

Former Malaysian Prime Minister's wife, Rosmah Mansor, arrested

It is the first time in Malaysia's history that the wife of a former prime minister has been charged.

Rosmah, wearing an orange dress and scarf, arrived under heavy security at the court complex on Thursday after being arrested the previous day and held overnight at the headquarters of the country's anti-corruption agency.

The court set bail at RM2 million in two sureties and allowed the bail payments to be made over a period, as long as it was settled by Oct 11.

"This is a good opportunity for (Rosmah) to.clear her name", her lawyer Geethan Ram Vincent told reporters.

Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib Razak of Barisan Nasional (National Front) and his wife Rosmah Mansor show their ink-stained fingers after voting in Malaysia's general election in Pekan, Pahang, Malaysia, May 9, 2018. In Rosmah's last appearance a week ago, she was questioned for 13 hours.

Judge Azura also granted another condition, which is for the defence to refrain from contacting any witnesses or potential witnesses. She looked cheerful and was smiling when she appeared at the building.

Najib was also in court on Thursday for a pre-trial hearing.

The couple, however, declined to give any statement and left at about 12.30pm.

Her husband Najib has been hit with more than 30 charges including abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money laundering related to the 1MDB case.

Mr Najib now faces 32 different charges in relation to 1MDB.

WSJ journalists Tom Wright and Bradley Hope, authors of the newly released book "Billion Dollar Whale", published an article in June which described Rosmah as a "political force and central actor" in the 1MDB scandal, linking her to fugitive Malaysian financier Low Taek Jho, regarded by many as the graft scandal's mastermind.

Rosmah Mansor was detained by the anti-graft agency Wednesday after it questioned her a third time over alleged theft and money laundering at the fund. She also spent the night in the agency's lock-up.

Six other countries, including the US, Switzerland and Singapore, opened probes into the embezzlement and diversion of funds from the 1MDB, a fund established to attract foreign investment which accumulated a debt of 42 billion ringgit (around $10 billion).

Najib told Reuters in an interview that his wife never received the pink diamond set.
