Intel's LTE Modems in iPhone XS/XS Max Unable to Match Qualcomm Speeds

iPhone XS and XS Max fared noticeably better than the iPhone X in LTE speed tests though that still isn't enough given that the Note 9 with Qualcomm modems emerging faster.

Last year, Samsung's smartphones offered significantly faster cellular-data speeds than Apple's, but a new study shows that the iPhone XS LTE performance nearly catches up with its rivals'. The 7560 is Intel's first modem to support all four USA wireless carriers, letting Apple drop Qualcomm, the world's dominant high-end modem supplier. This is good stuff. The new 4x4 MIMO antennas effectively doubled the iPhone XS speeds over prior models, while also helping more in weak signal conditions, which as PC Magazine notes shows how "desperately needed" the new antenna array was. Despite these increases, however, data showed that the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 with its Qualcomm X20 modem still edged out the iPhone XS Max, with mean LTE download speeds in the US of 43.2 Mbps and 97.7 Mbps in Canada, as compared to to the iPhone's 38.9 Mbps and 85.4 Mbps in both countries, respectively. The hardware tests were done using the Rohde & Schwarz measurement equipment.

Consumer Reports has published information pertaining to Apple's iPhone XS / XS Max handsets, and it won't make pleasant reading for Apple. Why Apple has taken so long to implement it is another question, but either way, it's clear: When it comes to cell signal, the iPhone XS is a big step up over the iPhone X, and a worthy competitor to any other device.

The iPhone XS shows, on average, 6.6Mbps faster download speeds on all United States carriers than the iPhone X, according to Speedtest Intelligence. Anyone upgrading from the iPhone 7 would see an even larger 9.9Mbps increase in the United States and 31.6Mbps jump in Canada. In a 16-app relay test, iPhone XS was significantly faster than the Note 9 in opening apps.

In our testing, the iPhone XS lasted 24.5 hours, and the Max made it to 26 hours. The tests again were conducted in varying conditions such as in a diminishing signal strength as well as under strong signal conditions. But if high-light smartphone showed good results, in low light was worse than its competitor. I think the secret is in this chart: Software matters.

Ookla noted that the iPhone X performance after upgrading from iOS 11 to iOS 12 is similar to the performance levels of Qualcomm versions of iPhone X running iOS 11.

Early versions of the iPhone XS firmware can sometimes cause problems when receiving signals.
