Microsoft is most likely to unveil the new Windows 10 October 2018 update at its event later tonight. Indian Express, citing a Vietnamese website which uploaded an unboxing video of the soon-to-be-launched Surface Pro 6, reported the leak. So, not choosing to refresh its flagship Surface Pro and Surface Laptop notebooks does raise a considerable number of questions. There's not even USB-C support in store for the new devices, something that's always been missing. Ahead of the unveiling, a new report has hinted at the changes that we can expect from the upcoming devices.
Surface Laptop 2 will retain the form factor of the predecessor but will improve in terms of specifications. Notably, the report claims that Microsoft has removed the integration of USB Type-C and Thunderbolt support in the new Surface lineup. Also, there will be other variants with 16GB of RAM, paired with 512GB or 1TB of SSD storage. This move would give the new Pro a bit more oomph at every level - the new Core m3-8100Y offers a maximum turbo clock of 3.4GHz as opposed to the 2.6GHz on the older m3-7Y30, while the 8th Gen Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs typically offered higher core counts than the 7th Generation CPUs the Surface Pro 2017 relied on.
It is likely that the Surface Laptop 2 will also look identical to the Surface Laptop, which was announced a year ago. Like the Surface Laptop 2, the device will be available with the consumer version of Windows 10 in S-Mode. While we had hoped that the new OS will top the charts this Fall, it now appears an additional few months might be required for that to happen.
